Reading about real-life monsters with Year 1

Ahead of our school trip to Blackpool Zoo next week, Year 1 are learning about real-life monsters.

We watched the following iMovie trailer to introduce the animals, then pupils read information, answered questions and wrote facts about the terrifying creatures!

Using QR codes to support reading

This week Year 1 have been learning about the invention of the phone. They were excited to receive a message from Alexander Graham Bell himself, who challenged them to find out about how phones have changed since he invented the first one.

Children read the following texts, scanning the QR codes to hear an audio version of the text ( which was pre-recorded using Audioboom) if they were unable to read the text independently. Children then answered comprehension questions, which were colour coded for each text.

Using Chatterpix as a descriptive writing prompt with Year 1

As part of our current Gruffalo topic, I used the free Chatterpix app as a stimulus for a setting description of the deep, dark woods prior to the appearance of the gruffalo! I was very proud of the quality written outcomes!

Speed Learning presentation: Hooking them in through tech

Thanks for attending our first ‘Speed Learning’ event. We hope you were able to add some new tech tools to your modern teacher toolkit. Here you will find my presentation as a video and some handy how-to guides I’ve created for the 5 apps I used: Chatterpix, Morfo Booth, iMovie, Tellagami, Explain Everything  and a guide on how to create QR codes. Some of the screen shot instructions are designed to be used with KS1 pupils. Feel free to share the guides with your colleagues and pupils! How To Catch a Porridge Thief!

My favourite topic this year was the Goldilocks crime scene we set up for Year One. Here is an article I have written for Innovate My School, sharing the topic.

There is an issue viewing the videos on iPad or iPhone due to unsupported Flash, so here is a link to the videos if you’re unable to view them:

My Year 1 pupils enjoyed using similes, alliteration  and powerful adjectives in these poems, which have been submitted for the Young Writers ‘My First Acrostic’ competition.
